Ahmednagar (Maharashtra): In a tragic incident in Ahmednagar district, an eight-year-old boy survived a seven-hour ordeal in a borewell but died within two hours of being rescued while undergoing treatment in a hospital, police said on Monday.

According to Kopargaon police station officer Machhindra T. Satpute, the boy, Sai P. Barhate, was playing near an open dry borewell in a field in Takli village when he fell into it around 11.30 a.m.

Immediately, his farm labourer parents and others tried to rescue him and alerted the police. A massive rescue operation was mounted by various agencies, volunteers and villagers.

After continuous efforts lasting nearly seven hours under the scorching sun, Sai was finally pulled out in an unconscious state around 6.30 p.m. and rushed to a private hospital in nearby Shirdi pilgrim town.

"Unfortunately, barely two hours later, he succumbed during treatment around 8 p.m.," Satpute told IANS.

Police have registered an accidental death case and are investigating the matter further, he added.

In May 2016, a six-year-old boy Sunil H. More slipped into an abandoned borewell in parched Shirur region of Pune and was rescued after a 31-hour ordeal. However, he succumbed shortly after in hospital.
