New Delhi: A Supreme Court Bench, led by Justice Dipak Mishra, here on Monday vacated the stay given on admissions into the IITs in a relief to over 50,000 IIT aspirants. The stay order was given when a petition was filed against the bonus marks given to the candidates.

The Bench also restrained the High Courts from entertaining any cases on the issue to "avoid confusion" and directed them to provide details of all such petitions. The Apex court on Friday had put on hold admissions to IITs, National Institutes of Technology and other colleges over awarding of bonus marks in JEE, an all-India examination taken by aspiring engineers.

The stay order was passed when Aishwarya Agarwal, a student, filed a petition against the award of 18 bonus marks to all candidates claiming it was arbitrary and wrong as it awarded the marks irrespective of the fact whether one attempted the questions or not. The petitioner contended that due to the bonus marks nearly 20,000 students more got qualified this year which adversely affected the rankings of the merit students.
