New Delhi: Nearly two weeks after the kidnap of twentynine-year-old Dr Akkala Srikant Goud of Gadwal, a medical PG student working with the Preet Vihar Metro Hospital here, a Delhi Police team rescued him after a reported shoot-out at Muzzaffarnagar in Western UP with the culprits, more than 100 km from here on Wednesday.

"Dr Goud is safe and sound and is being brought to the city. Not a scratch on him. We congratulate our boys", a DCP working on the case said. The Delhi Police faced a tough time with the “organised crime syndicate” which was, though traced, was elusive constantly shifting its hideouts.

Last Sunday, a shootout occurred between the combined teams of UP Police Special Task Force and Delhi Police and the criminals at Meerut but they escaped. The gang was then tracked to Haridwar, however, they fled from there too as the police teams were in hot pursuit.

Further tracking led the police to Muzzafarnagar where yet another shootout took place on Wednesday evening. The doctor was rescued and is being brought back to the safety of the city while the nabbed culprits were detained for interrogation.

Goud, who booked a private Ola cab on July 6 from Lakshminagar Police Station to go to his home after his duty around 11 pm, was kidnapped by the driver and his accomplice. They reportedly drove him to Dadri near Noida where the other members of the gang joined them.

The Ola cab driver and his three accomplices demanded Rs 5 crore after kidnapping him on the night of July 6. Ever since, the police have been tightlipped over the same in view of the safety of the victim. Several teams had been dispatched to trace the kidnapped doctor.

Though the police could trace the mobile and were keeping a tab on the movements of the culprits, they were wary to confront the driver who was using the victim's phone from a safe distance from their hide-outs. Dr Goud was dropped at the Lakshmi Nagar Metro Station around 11 pm by his friends who had gone out for dinner that night.

The next morning someone from the Ola management contacted the Preet Vihar Police Station around 4 am and told them that a passenger was kidnapped by the driver of their vehicle and that a demand for Rs 5 crore ransom was being made.

An advocate deputed by the Ola management even visited the Metro hospital to verify the facts, it is said. However, the hospital authorities disclosed that the doctor had not come for duty.Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and TRS MP A P Jitender Reddy, who had been tracking the case and have been in constant touch with the police, expressed joy at the happy ending and congratulated the police.
