During the course of hearing a plea filed by a Gujarat resident on the issue of medical study aspirants need to have an Aadhaar number, the Centre informed the Supreme Court on Wednesday that Aadhaar is not mandatory to apply for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examinations.

Informing further, the Centre stated that the UIDAI (issues Aadhaar) didn’t authorise the CBSE to insist that medical study aspirants are required to provide an Aadhaar number.

Earlier this month, the CBSE announced Aadhar number is mandatory for the NEET application for this year.

The Apex Court asked the Centre to decide regarding the extension of the March 31 deadline to mandatorily link Aadhaar with bank accounts and mobile numbers as the delay might create uncertainty, particularly in financial institutions.
