PM Modi wraps Sweden tour, set to hold bilateral talks with British PM today

After wrapping up the Sweden visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the United Kingdom on Wednesday and will hold bilateral talks with his British counterpart Theresa May. He will also meet Queen Elizabeth II and engage in several activities throughout his visit including attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). 

After wrapping up the Sweden visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the United Kingdom on Wednesday and will hold bilateral talks with his British counterpart Theresa May. He will also meet Queen Elizabeth II and engage in several activities throughout his visit including attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

Before his visit, PM Modi in a statement was quoted saying, "My visit to London presents another opportunity for both countries to infuse fresh momentum to this growing bilateral engagement. I will be focusing on enhancing India-UK partnership in the areas of healthcare, innovation, digitisation, electric mobility, clean energy, and cybersecurity. Under the theme of 'Living Bridge', I will also have the opportunity to meet people from various walks of life who have enriched the multi-faceted India-UK relationship.”

Key aspects of PM Modi’s visit to the UK:

  • He will launch an Ayurveda Centre of Excellence in London, interact with the CEOs working towards the agenda of economic partnership.
  • The Prime Minister will hold interactions with Indian-origin scientists working on cancer research, malaria and other tropical diseases. Following this, both the PMs of India and UK will initiate the India-UK CEOs Forum.
  • Next, PM Modi will be meeting Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace and then head to the 'Bharat Ki Baat, Sabke Saath' diaspora event which will be telecast live from the iconic Central Hall Westminster in London. He will address questions from across the world received via social media.
  • Modi will welcome the UK into the International Solar Alliance as its newest member and the partnership aims to raise USD 1 trillion of private and public finance to provide affordable and sustainable energy for all by 2030.
  • The CHOGM executive session will have British Prime Minister Theresa May welcome 52 other countries' heads of government.
  • Modi will participate in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on April 19, 20. Hosted by the UK, the meeting will have the country take over as the new Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth from Malta.
  • During Modi’s visit to the UK, various groups at the Parliament Square in London have planned a series of demonstrations, including a silent protest to condemn the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district.
  • According to the protest statement, "Following the horrific rape and murder of eight-year-old in the Kathua region of Kashmir, there will be a congregation meeting to silently protest and publicly express pain, sorrow and shock.”
  • After UK visit, PM Modi will have a brief stopover in Berlin on April 20 and meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
