Directing Karnataka to release at least 2 tmc of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court on Thursday further warned of serious consequences if it fails to release the water.

Tamil Nadu’s petition for framing of the scheme for the release of Cauvery water has been posted for hearing on Tuesday as the Apex Court asked the Centre to file an affidavit stating the steps taken to frame the scheme.

While the Attorney general K K Venugopal requested the court to postpone the hearing on this issue after May 12, after Karnataka assembly elections, TN counsel Shekhar Naphade criticised the Centre for playing politics over Cauvery water.

The counsel said that the temperature of Cauvery water is rising in TN keeping aside the summer temperature.

The Apex Court had asked the Centre last month to frame a draft scheme by May 3 for the implementation of the judgment on the distribution of Cauvery water between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry.

In its verdict, the Apex Court asked the Centre to formulate a scheme to ensure compliance of its judgement on the decades-old Cauvery dispute and made it clear that time will not be extended for this on any ground.
