In March 2015, PM Modi had appealed to financially stable sections of India to give up on their gas subsidy so that it can be used for the betterment of lives of the underprivileged.

About 4% of LPG users have given up their subsidy which varies for different states with North-East states taking the lead. Mizoram subsidy surrender rate being 14%, Manipur’s being 10% and 12% in Nagaland and Delhi. All the other states have comparatively lower percentages.

In 2016, more than 1Cr people surrendered their subsidy but since then only 4 lakh people have surrendered their subsidy.

There are 26 Crore LPG customers in India among which 25.7 Crore are in the domestic category but only 21.9 Crore are active customers.
