MUMBAI: A portion of a five-storey building situated on a busy road outside CST railway station came crumbling down, after a fire broke out. The fire broke out at 4:30 a.m on Saturday. Sixteen fire engines were put into the firefighting operation so that the fire wouldn't spread into neighbouring buildings. The firefighting operation was successful at putting the fire out, and the fire official had reported that there was no one trapped inside the building. It took three hours for the firefighters to put out the fire.

A group of firefighters were saved from a tragedy when they found that the building was going to collapse and moved away while putting out the fire. The building collapsed on two fire engines. Two firefighters who were standing on a ladder sustained minor injuries and were admitted to a hospital.

The state government authority, Mhada had vacated the premises four year ago. It was a C-1 category (most dangerous) building and such structures are to be demolished before reconstruction. It is still not clear why Mhada had not demolished the structure during the past four years, putting thousands of lives at risk as it is situated on a busy road.

Fortunately, the officials said that the building was unoccupied and there were no major injuries or deaths. BMC deployed vehicles and labourers were called to transfer the building debris to another location so that there would be no inconvenience to motorists.
