Chennai: Muslims celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr in Tamil Nadu with usual fervour, with special prayers among others marking the day. Prayers were offered across various mosques as well as designated prayer spots in different cities of the state such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Vellore and elsewhere. People exchanged pleasantries and greeted each other on the occasion.

State leaders including Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister K Palaniswami and DMK leader MK Stalin among others extended their festive greetings. "Eid-ul-Fitr brings to a close the month of Ramadan. It is a festival of merriment and joy. On this happy occasion let us practise tolerance towards fellow citizens and promote communal harmony in society by adopting the path of prayer, kindness and generosity," Purohit said in his message.

Palaniswami said following the footsteps of late chief minister "Amma" (Jayalalithaa), his government had this year distributed 5,145 tonnes of rice to over 3,000 mosques spread across the state for preparation of gruel during the Ramzan month. "Let peace prevail in the world," he said in a statement. DMK Working President Stalin wished for the well-being and progress of the people of Islam and said their lifestyle should improve in all aspects.
