THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 19-year-old boy was anguished when he had found that his class twelve certificates had been destroyed by the the deadly rainstorm in Kerala. As a result, he was desolated and he committed suicide, the police said on Monday.

The boy, Kailash and his parents had moved to a relief camp three days ago since his house had been fully waterlogged in the downpour.

Kailash and his parents hail from Karanthur in Kozhikode district. He had purchased new clothes and set apart some money for higher studies after getting admission for a course in the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) they said.

He returned home yesterday to take a look at the house as the rains diminished by a little, and found his plus two certificates soaked and in scraps, being shattered.

His death was exposed when his parents came to clean up the house as the water receded. A Police officer attached to the Kunnamanagalam station said that they were shocked to see him hanging.

Kailash’s father who is a labourer, is disheartened as his son was the family's only hope after all their belongings had been mostly destroyed by the rains.

Heavy rains in Kerala have so far claimed 210 lives and forced over 7.14 lakh people to take shelter in relief camps in the state.
