THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: From August 1 to 19, the state recorded 164% excess rainfall, breaking nearly 90 year old record. It received 770mm rain in this period. India Meteorological department (IMD) indicated this data.

In August 1931, the state received 1,132mm of rain, which is maximum ever recorded August rainfall for the state. In 1923, it got 877mm, which is the second highest.

The IMD statement said, “There were two consecutive active spells with above normal rainfall peaking around June 14 and June 20, respectively. A fresh spell of active rainfall commenced since August 8 and continued till August 16.”

On August 9, in Nilamboor, the highest amount of rainfall recorded in a region on a single day was 40 cm and 35 cm recorded in Peermade on August 16. As per IMDs latest data, the rainfall over the state during June, July and August has been 15%, 18% and 164% above normal respectively.

It was 90% above normal in Idukki district, the highest excess rainfall in southwest monsoon, followed by Palakkad where it was 73%.
