The October 31 editorial deeply analysed the need of aviation industry's development in global connectivity needs. But the common man is always dependent upon cheaper way of Railways for long distance travel in our country.
I think the government needs to announce a Railway Development Policy also with concessions, tax reliefs etc. Development of rail networks has to be taken up for connecting ports, airports, metro cities etc with high speed lines for making India a logistics hub in Asia. Also in India, Railways are the most common way of travel for common person. Development of Railways is grossly neglected from 1947.
Instead of developing one time railway basic network, the government is spending on Airports etc now. News is that many airports built across country turned ghost airports and still the government plans 200 new airports. In Bihar elections, the PM has promised four airports to Bihar at cost of Rs 2,700 crore. I think Biharis need more JanSadhaaran trains to travel across country for employment or business etc. For that matter, every common Indian citizen needs normal trains instead of air-conditioned Durantos etc.
Out of 1,15,000 km of total railway lines in India, only 16,000 km were built after the independence, whereas passenger and goods traffic increased 12 to 14 times. Manufacturing of wagons and coaches is not in commensurate with our GDP growth. Other nations like Japan, Spain, China, Korea, France etc developed high speed bullet trains running at a speed of 350 kmph between 1970 and 1980. (In India average speed is still 60-80 kmph it seems – maximum attained is 150 kmph).
It is due to lack of political vision at administration level. Daily one crore and thirty lakh passengers are safely travelling across the country due to committed Railwaymen of our country. But due to technical reasons, or natural calamities like floods, now and then accidents happen. The government needs to upgrade the technology of Railways and improve manpower in required areas of safety etc. Contrary to this, The government is purposefully maintaining two lakh vacancies unfilled in the Railways, as per news reports
We have excellent IITs and technical research institutes. Our Railway engineers overhauled the imported railway engines also. They removed all parts, oiled, repaired and re-assembled the engines whenever required. At least now, the government needs to develop common man's transport mode – Railways – by way of a special policy, which may create lakhs of jobs opportunities in operating, cargo handling, common passenger transport etc.
