While the Midterm holidays are here, it’s a challenge for both parents and children to spend time fruitfully. In today’s modern world, keeping children entertained during holidays is no easy task.
Parents are busy with their work; it is evitable for them to spend quality time with their kids which are causing the kids to get addicted to gadgets resulting in many health issues like obesity, poor eye sight. This scenario is bringing up many camps and events in the city everyday which are not only providing fun but also helping them hone their skills in their fields of interest.
Padmalatha Banala, a parent says that there is apartment culture all around and there is no place for children to play; physical exercise has become a major problem. I send my daughter every vacation for swimming classes so that she will be refreshed mentally and physically these clubs and camps provide children with a pleasant and refreshing environment and physical exercise.
An anonymous author said “Just because school is out doesn't mean brain drain needs to set in.” Many parents struggle with making their child study during the vacation. A child who is lagging behind in a subject will buck the idea of studying because children do not like what they are not good at.
However, children are more likely to cooperate if there is an interesting method involved in teaching them. Also, parents often feel guilty making the child study because it is, after all, vacation time. Parents can get past the guilt by realising they are going to give their child a big boost of confidence going into the next academic year. Many of these camps provide them an interesting way of learning new things. Music classes help children mould their personality and improve their skills in playing their chosen instrument. Dance classes teach them to shed their inhibitions and become confident individuals. Through singing, art, crafts and painting activities they have a chance to express themselves.
Vijaya Kumari, teacher, DAV, Banjara Hills, “As a teacher I would advise the students to take up craft work instead of regular studies because craft work is important for project work in schools. Going out with parents to explore historical sites and noting down the importance of the sites they visit helps them improve their writing skills.
An event manager who organises camps for children every vacation says these days children don’t have proper physical activity which is making them passive; camps help them rediscover and keep their mind alert and active.
Shatabdi Das, asst professor, dept of psychology, Koti Women’s College says, “Vacation campus should be fun. Children get a chance to learn freely without any restrictions, which bring out cognitive, physical and creative abilities in children. Let this vacation not be wasted by letting your kids sitting at home and whiling away time by playing games online. Get them to productively use their vacation by making new friends and learning useful and interesting things.
