FIFA World Cup: Uruguay Defeats Italy 1:0, Crashes Italy’s Dreams

It was a winner-takes-all match deciding who will join Costa Rica in the next stages. A draw was needed enough for Italy as a superior goal difference to go through to the last 16. For Uruguay, as they need a three point to overtake Italy and progress to the knockout stages and that’s what they did.

Italy were keeping the game under control hoping to achieve a draw that would have seen them through to the last 16. But the game changed when Marchisio made a late challenge planting his studs on Arevalo's calf and was sent off. From then on, it was only Uruguay.

Uruguay took the lead on 10 man Italy in the 81’ minute, on a corner kick the ball bounced off the back of Godin and finds its way into the back of the net.

Italy, who had sat back in numbers before Marchisio’s dismissal, poured forward to try to rescue the situation but Andrea Pirlo’s 85th-minute free kick was their best chance and Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera swept it around the post.

The four-time world champions are eliminated at the group stages of the World Cup for the second time in a row.Uruguay would be facing Ivory Coast in the next round on June 28
