Hyderabad: Sania Mirza is relishing the ‘fantastic year’ she has enjoyed this season. This comes four years after she had ‘contemplated quitting the sport because of a series of nagging career-threatening injuries.’

Stating that the WTA Final euphoria is yet to sink in, the face of Indian woman tennis for close to two decades said that she and Cara Black gave the best possible parting gift to each other with the season ending title.

‘It sort of feels sad that we are parting ways. Bt I respect her decision because she wishes to enjoy motherhood and reduce her participation in the tour,’ Sania said while talking to reporters at her Academy here on Tuesday.

‘As professional players we have to make adjustments and move on. I am now looking forward to an equally rewarding partnership with Su Wie Hsieh of Chinese Taipei. She is a good player and hopefully we will hit it off in the new season,’ she said.

She can reflect with pride on the phenomenal year gone by, in which she won the US Open doubles title and the Asiad gold with the WTA Finals coming as the icing on the cake.

‘I have realised an important goal at Singapore. Now I will go all out to be the world’s best woman doubles player. Taking the No One spot is my immediate major priority,’ said Sania, who will next be seen in action in the eagerly awaited IPTL, which she maintains will boost the sport across the country thanks to the presence of living legends.

On the comments made against her following her high-profile marriage to Shoaib Malik, she said she was thankful to those who opened the Pandora’s Box.

"I actually want to thank all those people who put me through that. That made me mentally tough. I think fighting a match-point is easier than these people that I fight here. I wish them well, though. They have made me tough. It has also shown how much the country supports me. I think that came out visibly," Sania said.

Meanwhile, Sania, who dedicated the latest triumph to ‘My India,’ showered lavish praises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being a constant source of encouragement, including using the social media as a medium. She said Modi was quite a knowledgeable man when it came to sports and the exploits of Indian sportspersons. She appealed to everyone to actively participate in the Swachh Bharat Abhyan.

In the same breadth, she thanked K Chandrasekhar Rao, Chief Minister of Telangana State of which she is the first brand ambassador.
