Hyderabad: All roads led to LB Stadium today, as Hyderabad Aces took on Punjab Marshalls in the grand finale of Champions Tennis League, Season 2. Punjab Marshalls set the tone for the game from the word go. Both the team captains were fired up and laid down the foundation for the following four sets, which received thunderous applause from the spectators. The emotions were running high in the stadium as the crowd cheered every move and rallied behind their champion players to bring home glory. The first two sets of the game went Punjab’s way and not to be left far behind, the Hyderabad Aces came back strong with a comprehensive third set. At the end, Punjab Marshalls kept the nerve and displayed a fine display of shots, accuracy, power and consistency leading to triumphing the coveted CTL 2015 title.
As expected, the stadium was not just filled with sport enthusiasts but saw a host of celebrities make a beeline at the stadium; Rana Dagubati and Kajal Aggarwal made their presence felt, which upped the glamour quotient and in turn lifted the spirits of the already thrilled crowd inside the stadium.
The first set was the legends singles played between Thomas Johansson, captain of Hyderabad Aces against Greg Rusedski, captain of Punjab Marshalls. With fire in their eyes and power in their racquet, coupled with unmatched class on the court and shot selection, the legends duo enthralled the crowd with big serves, sharp returns and deft volleys. The captain of Punjab Marshalls proved his mettle on the court to win the set with a score of 5-4.
The following set was women's singles where crowd favorite Martina Hingis of Hyderabad Aces took on Elina Svitolina of Punjab Marshalls. The crowd gathered momentum and started chanting Martina Hingis' name, which set up a classic clash of styles where both the ladies displayed elegance in shot selection combined with powerful shots and some excellent moves around the court. It was a close contest between the two players, which had to be decided through a tie-breaker and was finally won by Elina Svitolina of Punjab Marshalls with a score of 5-4.
The next set was mixed doubles, Martina Hingis and Ivo Karlovic from Hyderabad Aces went head to head with Elina Svitolina and Macros Baghdatis of Punjab Marshalls. Mixed doubles has had some exciting moments and last minute surprises throughout the season and this one too was no different. The match took a twist for the good in this set where the duo from Hyderabad Aces turned the tables. Both the sides had a bagful of big serves, fine volleys and passing shots to make the set a cracker of a game. In the end, the duo from Hyderabad Aces got the better of Punjab Marshalls to win the set with a score of 5-2.
The fourth set was Men's doubles between Ivo Karlovic and Jeevan of Hyderabad Aces against Marcos Baghdatis and Saketh Myneni of Punjab Marshalls. The set had some high points in the game where the duo from Hyderabad and Punjab exchanged a volley of decisive shots, brilliant exchanges, matching each other's skills. The crowd cheered the loudest, were up in arms backing the home team after every shot. Saketh Myneni of Punjab Marshalls played exceptionally well to bring back his team into contention. It was a blockbuster in the making when the game, for the third time, had to be decided via a tie-breaker. Ultimately, the Punjab duo went home victorious with a score of 5-4.
By the time the match entered into the final set, which was Men's singles, the scores were even at 17 each to both the finalists. The match went down to the wire and the crowd was set for a nail biting finish. The atmosphere across the stadium was electrifying and the battle was set for the last hurrah. For the fourth time in the match, the game had to be decided via the tie-breaker and Marcos Baghdatis from Punjab Marshalls took the game home with a score of 5-4.
The final score, Hyderabad Aces at 21 and Punjab Marshalls at 22.
