Hyderabad: Former captain of Andhra cricket team B Ramprasad passed away after a brief illness here on Wednesday. He was 75 and is survived by his wife and two daughters. A right-hand opening batsman and wicket-keeper, he represented Andhra in 59 Ranji Trophy matches spread over a record uninterrupted 17 seasons in which he scored 2240 runs at an average of 20.18 with two centuries.

He rubbed shoulders with stalwarts of the golden age when players of the calibre of Tiger Pataudi, AG Milkman Singh, ML Narsimha and the spin quartet ruled the roost. The Nellore born Ramprasad, who was employed with State Bank of India till retirement, was based in Madras that saw him figure prominently in the league matches conducted by Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).

In his tribute DVVS Somayajulu, President of Andhra Cricket Association (ACA), remarked that ‘“in the sad demise of Ramprasad, ACA lost one of its top ranked batsmen of yesteryear. He brought respect to the Ranji team with his gritty showing.” Vice-President of BCCI, Dr G Gangaraju said, “ACA lost one of its jewels in the sad demise. Ramprasad was a stylish opening bat and wicket-keeper, whose determination to stay in the middle was an abject lesson to his teammates.
