Karachi : Pakistan's wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed has been appointed as the team's T20 skipper after Shahid Afridi stepped down from the post following the team's early exit from the World T20.

Confirming the news, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said that they were pleased to announce Sarfraz as the new T20 skipper.

PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan wished luck to Sarfraz for his new role and said that his appointment was open ended, the Express Tribune reported.

Sarfraz, who served as a vice-captain of ODIs and T20s, has made 21 appearances for Pakistan in the shortest format of the game at a strike rate of 120.24. He has also notched up two half-centuries for the country in T20Is.

Earlier, head coach Waqar Younis had also announced that he is quitting from his position, considering the PCB's failure and leak of a confidential report after the team's World T20 exit as a major reason behind his resignation three months before his contract expires.

Pakistan, who crashed out of the prestigious tournament after three successive defeats against arch-rivals India, New Zealand and Australia in the group stages, will play their next T20I against England on September 7.
