Riyad Mahrez, one of Leicester City's most consistent player, was elected on Sunday April 24, the best player of the English Premier League Championship this season by the PFA (Professional Football Association) awarding his outstanding contribution to his club's success, on its way to a unique win.

Riyad Mahrez was crowned the PFA football of the year last night, which isn't too shabby for a player who reportedly cost just £400,000.

That's 80 times less than the £32m that last year's winner of the award, Eden Hazard, reportedly cost Chelsea.

In fact, you have to go all the way back to the first season of the Premier League, 1992-93, to find the last PFA Player of the Year (POTY) whose transfer fee was as small as Mahrez's.

Paul McGrath reportedly set Aston Villa back £400,000 when they plucked him from Manchester United back in 1989, four years before he won the POTY award.

That's the equivalent of almost £900,000 today though when adjusted for inflation.

The next most recent PFA POTY winner who cost less than Mahrez was David Platt. He was also playing for Villa at the time and had cost them £200,000 when they signed him in 1988.

That too would have set Villa back more than Mahrez when you take into account inflation though - £483,756.

The lowest transfer fee paid for a player to have won the POTY award is for Tottenham's Pat Jennings.

The Northern Irish shot-stopper reportedly cost Spurs just £27,000 back in 1964. However, that's still more than Mahrez's fee when adjusted for inflation - £493,548.

There is just one PFA POTY winner whose transfer fee when adjusted for inflation is less than what Leicester paid for Mahrez.

Peter Reid reportedly cost Everton just £60,000 when he signed for Everton back in 1982. That's the equivalent of £191,011 in today's money.

There are, of course, former PFA players of the year who didn't cost their clubs anything at all in terms of transfers.

Ryan Giggs (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), John Terry (Chelsea), John Wark (Ipswich), Liam Brady (Arsenal) and Norman Hunter (Leeds United) all came through their respective clubs' youth academies.
