Paris: Defending Champion Stan Wawrinka and fifth seed Kei Nishikori entered the third round of the French Open in contrasting fashion on Wednesday. In the women's singles, former runner-up Simona Halep and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova also entered the third round.
Wawrinka reached the third round after labouring to a 7-6 (9/7), 6-3, 6-4 win over Japan's Taro Daniel.

Second seed Andy Murray survived his second successive five-set battle to reach the third round. Murray, three times a semi-finalist, wore down France's world number 164 Mathias Bourgue, who had never won a tour-level match before this week, 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and goes on to face 37-year-old Ivo Karlovic for a place in the last 16.

Karlovic, the 27th seed, defeated Australian wildcard Jordan Thompson 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/3), 6-7 (4/7), 12-10 in a four and a half hour marathon, unleashing 41 aces and 102 winners. Japan’s Kei Nishikori maintained his impressive clay-court form to outclass Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round.

The fifth seed Nishikori, whose only defeats on clay this year came in the Barcelona final against Rafael Nadal and in Madrid and Rome where he was stopped in the semis by Novak Djokovic, will face Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in the third round. Verdasco crushed Croatia’s Ivan Dodig.
In the women second round, World No 6 Simona Halep defeated Zarina Diyas 7-6(5), 6-2.

Halep won on the Philippe Chatrier court. However, it was far from straight forward for the Romanian and the 2014 finalist, who trailed 4-1 in the opening set against the Kazakhstani. In the next round, Halep will face Japanese Naomi Osaka after she eased past Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, 6-3, 6-3.

Also safely through to the last 32 were Petra Kvitova, a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Hsieh Su-Wei, and 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, who impressed during a 6-1, 6-3 win over Heather Watson. Spanish tennis player Garbine Muguruza also managed to advance to the third round after defeating French Myrtille Georges. World No 4 Muguruza defeated Georges 6-2, 6-0 in a game that only lasted 53 minutes.
