Hyderabad: The State Government has assured complete support to the famed Pullela Gopichand Badminton Stadius (PGBA). It would be in the fitness of things if the Academy establishes centres across the State. This was indicated by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao here on Monday. He was responding to a plea by the chief national badmionton coach, when he and his Rio Olympics silver medal winnig protege PV Sindhu called on Rao at his camp office.

The Chief Minister congratulated her on the sterling performance and presented her with a cheque for Rs five crore. He also presented Gopichand with a cheque for Rs one crore and cash incentives of Rs 25 lakh each to Sindhu’s physiotherapist Challagundla Kiran and Kidambi Srikant. He remarked that Sindhu did the country proud by winning the medal and appreciated Gopichand’s efforts in fine-tuning the talent.

He had special world of appreciation for Sindhu’s parents Vijaya and Ramana who gave all the encouragement to Sindhu. The Chief Minister observed that six out of 50 top badminton players in the world are products of the Gopichand Academy.

He pointed out that in India academics took precedence over sports. The government will encourage sportspersons and aspiring young talent. About 300 acres allotted at Hakimpet on the outskirts of twin cities should be put to use efficiently for sports. Home Minister Nayini Narasimha Reddy, Municipal Administration Minister K Taraka Rama Rao and others took part in the programme.
