The biggest names in Indian athletics congregated here in the first of June, 2017. The grand Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports in Patiala would be the stage for them to showcase their prowess. India’s best track and field exponents were looking to give their best and qualify for the Asian Athletics Championships, which would be held in July a month later.

With the mercury continuing to rise, the Women’s 400m Hurdles Final event saw Kerala’s Anu R blazing a hot trail. She not only won the race, but also set a Meet Record, defeating Jauna Murmu. She pipped Jauna, who was leading earlier, by .12 seconds, in their nailbiting encounter. Anu R emerged triumphant in 57.39 seconds.

This is how the the Final Standings in this category looked. Favourites Santosh Kumari and Arpitha M, also featured in the contest, but failed to impress.

In the Men’s 400m Hurdles Final event, another Keralite, Jabir MP, clinched the first spot, defeating compatriots Santosh Kumar T and Durgesh Kumar Pal. He cleared the finishing line in 50.47 seconds. His coach looked understandably elated in his moment of triumph.

Binu Jose was expected to perform better, but he too lagged behind others by a considerable margin. He finished 7th just ahead of Naga Bhushan CP, who came in last clocking 53.52 seconds.

In the Women’s Shot Put Final, National Record Holder Manpreet Kaur from Haryana did not disappoint. She finished in first place. Like Anu, She too set a Meet Record by throwing the shot a distance of 17.04 metres. She had already qualified for the Asian Athletics Championship, and was now aiming to improve further, ahead of the IAAF World Championships in August.

Her close rival Raman Preet Kaur threw considerably less distance than her and came in 2nd, followed by Anamika Das at 14.67m. It was a clean sweep for Manpreet Kaur.

So a fantastic beginning, then, to this amazing extravaganza of human endeavor. The event had already showcased some bright young talent setting the theme on Day 1. The Hopes of all the spectators, officials and fans would now soar even higher, as the championship moved into its second day on Friday, the second of June.
