There was no stopping the ever ready to conquer skaters from Telangana State. In keeping with their reputation, they reaped a rich harvest in the 14th National Ice Figure Skating Championship 2017 that was held at Gurgaon.

Considering that each State member has been a roller skater, their stellar performance as ice skaters remains indicative of their flair for adaptability. This becomes pronounced as they had training sessions on ice a just a week ahead of the coveted championship.

A haul of eight gold, four silver and five bronze medals in competitive events like solo figure skating, ice dance skating and synchronized skating, speaks volumes of the mentorship by the country’s first skating Arjuna awardee, Anup Kumar Yama. Incidentally, he bagged two gold medals in the senior category.

Quite naturally Yama was exuberant and foresaw a tremendous future for skaters, particularly if they stay committed to the sport and go in for further training.
In the hour of glory, Yama did not miss out on pointing out the lacuna that exists. This is coming as a major hindrance for all those budding ice skaters from the State.

‘You see the young boys and girls have a natural talent for the exciting sport. Unfortunately, they are deprived of infrastructural support. I wish to extol the State Government, which is keen on helping multiple sports disciplines, to provide space and rink facilities so that we can have home-grown national and international champions,’ he said.

Hopefully, their pleas would be taken note of.
