Kvitova, one of seven women's Grand Slam champions in action on Day Seven, was edged out in a tight tussle on Court One -- snapping a 13-match winning run.

World No 3 Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza on Saturday qualified for the French Open round of 16 for the fifth straight year, beating veteran Australian player Samantha Stosur 6-0, 6-2. Muguruza, who won the French Open in 2016, is set to play the next round against Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine, who beat Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova 6-2, 6-4.

Maria Sharapova crushed sixth seed Karolina Pliskova 6-2, 6-1 while US Open champion Sloane Stephens clung on for dear life to reach the fourth round with a 4-6, 6-1, 8-6 victory over Italian Camila Giorgi.

When clay court machine Rafa Nadal faces his old friend Richard Gasquet the 10-time Roland Garros champion gets a free ride and that was again the case as he bulldozed past the local favourite 6-3 6-2 6-2 to reach the French Open last 16 on Saturday.

The 25th seeded Estonian Anett Kontaveit made the last 16 for the first time by downing Czech eighth seed Petra Kvitova who saw her 13-match win streak end in a horror show of 57 unforced errors. Kontaveit next faces Sloane Stephens.

In the men singles draw, hard-hitting Russian Karen Khachanov knocked out France's number one player Lucas Pouille 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. Italy's Fabio Fognini made the last 16 for the second time with a 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Britain's last man standing Kyle Edmund.
