The 23-time major winner stated simply that she couldn’t serve, that she has been having issues with her pectoral muscle and that it was hard to play when she can’t serve.

The 36 year old was in a doubles match alongside her sister,Venus, against Andreja Klepac and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.Williams who served second, was seen clutching her chest in her lone serving game in the deciding set.

The player also stated that the first time she felt the pain in the pectoral muscle was in the match against Julia Goerges, that she didn’t know what the pain was and that it was really painful.

Williams explained that the doubles was a test to see if she could go through her fourth rounds single clash and that she would not have known what she would have felt under match play unless she played that match.She also stated that she was looking forward to the match against Sharapova, but she had promised herself and her coach that she would not play if she was not at her 50 or 60 percent.

Sharapova stated that she was also looking forward to her match against Williams and that she wishes Williams a speedy recovery.
