The 33rd edition of the popular Multiclass National Level Sailing Championship held as part of ‘Hyderabad Sailing Week’ in the backdrop of Hussainsagar Lake will commence here on Tuesday.
Hyderabad: The 33rd edition of the popular Multiclass National Level Sailing Championship held as part of ‘Hyderabad Sailing Week’ in the backdrop of Hussainsagar Lake will commence here on Tuesday.
While the national sailing coaching camp was held in the city from June 17 to 30, as a precursor to the main event, the sailing week will feature an exclusive seminar on ‘Race Management’.
IT Minister KT Rama Rao will inaugurate the championship, which is being collaborated by EME Sailing Association. The formal inauguration if slated for 2.30pm.
Announcing the schedule and their preparedness to showcase the best of the water sport spectacle, Major General TSA Narayanan, Vice-Commodore, EME Sailing Association (EMESA), told reporters here on Sunday this would be a watershed edition for them.
“We have achieved a new milestone. From this year onwards, the event has been accredited as a Yachting Association of India (YAI) national ranking leg where in the performance of the sailors will be ranked, which will boost their prospects during the selection of the national team,” he pointed out.
Major Alok Kumar, Secretary of the Association, said that it will witness the biggest congregation of sailors from across the nation.
As it is the Senior Multiclass ranking regatta, under YAI and Laser ranking championship under Laser Class Association of India (LCAI), competitive categories where the sailors will eye the pot of gold will include Laser Standard, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7 rigs and 470 class, RS: X, FX, Finn Class and 49er classes of boats.
Meanwhile, the run-up to the extravaganza was set in motion on Sunday with a lively Green Brigade walk that was themed ‘Fit Hyderabad Swachh Hyderabad’ and a massive ‘Save Lake Campaign’ human chain formation. Both were organised by Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), Secunderabad.
The twin events attracted the participation of over 6000 enthusiastic students from Army schools, NCC cadets, army personnel and youth.
The 3.5kms Green Brigade walk was flagged-off by former Indian cricket captain and a sworn fitness freak Mohammad Azharuddin and Seema Singh, Chairperson, Family Welfare Organisation, MCEME.
He hailed the organisers for the painstaking efforts taken to spread awareness about cleanliness and staying fit besides conducting a mega championship that was putting Hyderabad on the envious world sailing map.
Bolstered by the Swachh Bharat drive, children voluntarily undertook the cleanliness drive to promote ecological awareness and the need to have eco-friendly environs.
