I will grab coffee with a friend, work in the library, host a friend who’s visiting, or even leave work early for an event. But, for the most part, the typical Google intern (undergrad or grad) goes through the a similar routine that involves coding, talking to your host, eating, and going to meetings.

Everyone’s experience is different, but this is what my routine this summer has been so far:

Arrive at about 10am. I’m not really a morning person. I can wake up early, but I won’t be productive. That, and I walk to work, so I tend to get in a bit later. Also, it helps that my team doesn’t really get in until 10 or 10:30.

Eat breakfast. My go to breakfast at Google is a cup (yes, a cup, not a bowl) of Cheerios with bananas and milk. Yum.

Answer emails, check calendar for the day, take care of administrative things. I like to do this in the morning while I’m eating breakfast at my desk.

Code. Because this is what I do.

Eat lunch. My team is awesome and eats lunch together every day! And, I post pictures of froyo or sometimes even pictures of my plate (if the food is pretty enough). You can find these photos on my Instagram!

Code. Because this is what I do.

Chat with my host. We chat at least once a day. Sometimes, it happens a couple of times a day. But, even though I’m returning to the same team, my host still makes it a point to check in on me rather than ignoring me, which is great.

Code. Because this is what I do.

Get a snack. This usually happens around 3 or 4 pm. Or earlier, if I’m having a particularly slow day. I love to munch when I’m thinking or drink something sweet like ice tea lemonade or flavored water.

Code. Because this is what I do.

Eat dinner. Sometimes this happens at work. Sometimes, I go out for dinner. Kind of depends on the day!

Maybe code. This kind of depends – most of the time I go home if I’m not close to finishing something.

Go home. Yes, I actually leave the office. I’m weird and usually leave at 7:30 or 8.

Of course, there are occasionally meetings or talks or events. But, on a normal day at work, this is what I do. Sprinkled in with these normal events are random chats with teammates and funny incidents that cause the whole team to laugh. And yes, sometimes I check my personal email or my text messages or my Facebook or Quora. Occasionally, I will grab coffee with a friend, work in the library, host a friend who’s visiting, or even leave work early for an event.
