ET recently asked New Delhi-based researcher Prime Database to do some number crunching based on the figures disclosed by the companies in their annual reports. Here are 9 highest-paid independent directors based on the report.
Bernardus Johannes Maria Verwaayen
Better known as Ben Verwaayen, CEO of Alcatel-Lucent between 2008 and 2013, he got Rs 2.5 crore in the year ended March 2015 for serving on the board of Bharti Airtel. The 63-year-old Dutch national is co-founder of Keen Venture Partners, which backs entrepreneurs and their ideas.
Aman Mehta
Former HSBC Asia-Pacific CEO is next. Mehta, 69, got Rs 2.3 crore for being on the board of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the country's leading IT outsourcing company.
Ron Sommer
The 66-year-old German citizen serves on the board of TCS. Sommer earned about Rs 2 crore from the company in fiscal year 2015.
M Damodaran
Former Sebi chairman M Damodaran sits on the board of Tech Mahindra. Sixty-six-year-old Damodaran too earned about Rs 2 crore from the company in the fiscal year 2015.
KV Kamath
Former banker KV Kamath served on the board of Infosys between 2009 and 2015. Kamath too is tied at the third spot alongwith Damodaran and Sommer with an earning of about Rs 2 crore from the company in the fiscal year 2015.
Albert Joseph Hieronimus
Following the trio is Albert Joseph Hieronimus, 68, who got Rs 1.72 crore for being on the board of Bengaluru-based software firm Mind Tree.
Clayton Magleby Christensen
Next is Clayton Magleby Christensen. The 63-year-old Christensen, best known as the architect of disruptive innovation, earned Rs 1.55 crore as an outside director of TCS.
Jeffrey Sean Lehman
Christensen is followed by fellow American scholar Jeffrey Sean Lehman, 59, who earned Rs 1.20 crore as an external director at Infosys during the year.
Robin Ann Abrams
Robin Ann Abrams, 64, is the highest-paid foreign woman independent director at an Indian company. The former CEO of US-based Palm Computing earned nearly Rs 1 crore from being on the board of HCL Technologies.
