Chinese smartphone manufacturer Coolpad immediately attracted eyeballs when it launched its first device in India - Coolpad Note 3. At the time of its launch, the Note 3 was the cheapest smartphone to come with a fingerprint sensor. Fast forward to today, and that title now belongs to the Note 3 Lite, another Coolpad product.
Coolpad's products are surely bang-for-buck devices. However, the company's latest handset - Coolpad Max - is its most expensive yet. Priced at Rs 24,999, Coolpad Max is the company's venture into the upper mid-range segment. But does it manage to deliver, as Coolpad's other devices in the past have? Here's our review
Design and display
In terms of looks, Coolpad Max smartphone resembles the iphone 6 a lot. It sports a similar metal and glass unibody design, with rounded edges and curved front glass panel. And thanks to the rose gold colour of our review unit, the similarity became all the way more apparent.
Coolpad Max's front panel is mostly about its 5.5-inch display of 1080x1920 pixel resolution and 403ppi. Since the phone has on-screen navigation keys, there are no physical buttons on the front. During our testing, we found the display to be really good. Colour reproduction was accurate and viewing angles were good as well.
Performance and camera
The key specs of the Coolpad Max phone are:
Memory: 64GB in-built, with support for memory cards of up to 32GB capacity
OS: Android OS, v5.1.1 (Lollipop) with Coolpad skin on top
CPU: Octa-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 SoC
RAM: 4GB RAM
Connectivity options: 4G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.1 and GPS
Battery: 2,800mAh
Camera: 13MP rear camera with dual-tone LED flash, 5MP front-facing camera
If we take a look at the spec sheet, the on-board storage and RAM definitely seem to be the key highlights of the Coolpad Max. Apart from that, the specs are largely standard. The 2,800mAh battery of the Coolpad Max lasted for a day on single charge, with moderate use. The fact that it comes with Quick Charge functionality also helped things a bit.
Verdict
Coolpad Max is pitted against the likes of Xiaomi Mi 5. It's true that the smartphone comes with a slew of features like good design, fingerprint sensor and of course, the 'Dual in One' profile system. However, the build quality could've been a bit better. Also the Mi 5 offers a flagship-class Snapdragon 820 processor at the same price.
All said, the Coolpad Max's is a well-rounded smartphone. But its asking price of Rs 24,999 is a bit too much, and there are better choices out there.
The non-removable back panel of Coolpad Max houses a 13MP rear camera module with LED flash. It also has the fingerprint sensor and Coolpad branding below it. With the volume rocker on the left and power key on the right, the phone's frame feels sturdy in hand. The 3.5mm audio jack, speaker and micro-USB port are all placed at the bottom.
