Coolpad has become quite well-known in the Indian smartphone market for offering feature-laden yet affordable devices. The company was the first one to launch a smartphone with 3GB RAM and a fingerprint sensor under Rs 10,000 - the Coolpad Note 3.But that's old news.

Coolpad is back with its latest budget offering - Mega 2.5D, promoting the device as a selfie-focussed smartphone. We played around with the Coolpad Mega 2.5D for a few days, and here's our review.

Design and displayHaving a metallic frame with rounded corners, the Coolpad Mega 2.5D is fairly slick looking. It has a unibody design with 2.5D curved glass display (hence the name), which gives it a bit of a premium appearance. But this also makes the display prone to smudges.

Coming to the sides, the right has the power button and the dual-sim card tray, while the volume keys are placed at the left. A 3.5mm audio jack sits at the bottom, and the top has a microUSB port.

Although the rear appears to have a metallic appearance, it's actually made of plastic. It houses an 8MP primary camera with LED flash, along with the Coolpad logo and the speaker grille at the bottom.

The front is primarily dominated by the 5.5-inch HD display of 720x1280 pixel resolution. During our testing, we found the display to be decent. Its colour reproduction is accurate and viewing angles are fairly good as well. The front houses the Coolpad logo on the bottom edge of the display, along with an 8MP selfie-camera, earpiece and the usual array of sensors on the top edge. There are no physical buttons as the Mega 2.5D uses on-screen navigation buttons.

Performance:The key specs of the Coolpad Mega are:

Memory: 16GB in-built, with support for microSD cards
Operating system: Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with Cool UI 8.0 UI layer
CPU: 1GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735P processor
RAM: 3GB
Connectivity options: 4G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS
Camera: 8MP rear and front cameras
Dimensions: 153 x 76.8 x 7.9 mm
Weight: 143g
Battery: 2,500mAh (non-removable)

Looking at the specs, the Coolpad Mega offers pretty much the same as competing Chinese manufacturers bring to the table.
During our testing, the performance of the Coolpad Mega was just about average.

Arguably the biggest problem we faced was the lag while performing even basic operations such as unlocking the phone or switching between apps. This isn't something we expected from a phone having 3GB of RAM.

The photos that we took using the rear camera were, for the most part, decent. They had fair amount of detail and colour reproduction was good as well. All in all, we were quite happy with the image quality of both front and rear cameras.

Verdict After the Note 3 and Note 3 Lite, the Mega 2.5D is the company's third budget smartphone. While the first two were good performers, the Coolpad Mega is not as impressive. It even lacks a fingerprint sensor that is increasingly becoming common in smartphones these days. For those looking at alternatives within the same price range, the recently launched Xiaomi Redmi 3S will be a much better option.
