Genpact, UpGrad and IIIT-Bengaluru have jointly come up with a postgraduate diploma program on data analytics.
Data scientist has been termed as the sexiest job of the 21st century. Rightly so, since the career opportunities are immense and the pay packages are awesome. However, there is still confusion about what does it take to be a data scientist.
The simplest answer is that anyone with relevant industry expertise can become a data analyst. An analyst can further upskill himself to be a data scientist too. To differentiate on these roles, while the job of a data analyst is niche the work of a data scientist is far more refined than that.
There is a dearth of talent in both these domains. While the present generation is still getting ready to take on the Big Data jobs, the existing professionals are equally confused about how to be ready for a long run in Big Data. As per a statistics, India alone will face shortage of 200,000 data scientists in 2016.
Realising the dearth of appropriate talent in this sphere, Genpact, UpGrad and International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore (IIIT-B), have jointly come up with a postgraduate diploma program on data analytics.
These three players have designed a nine-month long program, which aims to bridge the gap in the analytics industry. With this program, they plan to train over 10,000 people over the next 3-4 years. The program essentially targets the working professionals. It will help them acquire additional industry relevant knowledge, grow their professional network and accelerate career in data analytics industry.
Speaking to TechGig.com, Sidhartha Shishoo, vice president and people function leader, analytics and research at Genpact, said, “this domain is extremely niche and it is difficult to manage its talent demand and supply balance in both domestic as well as international markets. In the past few years we have struggled with the routine way of hiring people from the market. It is difficult to find right people at the right time. We have been working very closely with industry bodies like Nasscom to understand how talent can be nurtured to make it industry ready. We have also been working with analytics companies to bridge this talent gap. We have observed that there are is a variety of people working in several industries who are fit for a job in analytics industry. They may not have the skillset related to Big Data analytics but they have domain expertise that can help them fare through this job well. We plan to train such people and make them ready for Big Data analytics jobs.”
Apart from the theoretical training, Genpact and UpGrad will also host events for students at Genpact offices, provide mentorships with Genpact leaders and offer recruitment opportunities for students among other activities.
