Czech carmaker Skoda launched the Monte Carlo edition of the Rapid in India a couple of months back. Post the launch of the promising Kodiaq and Octavia RS, Skoda India was expecting a well-deserved jolly time. However, the verdict of the Skoda Rapid Monte Carlo lawsuit has created a roadblock for the brand.

The ‘Monte Carlo’ monicker in the Rapid Monte Carlo stands as a tribute to Skoda Motorsport division. The company has more than 110 years of exposure to rally and motorsport. One among the numerous well-known motorsport events is the Rallye Monte Carlo which many enthusiasts look forward to.

Many of us are also familiar with Monte Carlo as a clothing brand with roots in Monaco. A Chandigarh-based company, Monte Carlo Apparels, filed a lawsuit against Skoda India accusing the latter for trademark infringement. Despite the fact that Skoda pays a royalty to Monaco-based Monte Carlo, the district court has ordered the automaker to refrain from using the Monte Carlo name in any of its products.

The Skoda Rapid Monte Carlo edition was launched with a starting price of Rs 10.75 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) and featured cosmetic changes including 16-inch black alloy wheels and several subtle touches on the inside.

The roof, diffuser, ORVMs and spoiler also come finished in black. While the judge has termed the case as “crystal clear”, Skoda Auto continues to sell Monte Carlo editions of its products in other markets.
