Regulations will help consumers make the right decision while buying an Air Purifier

New Delhi: Sharp, the Indian market leader in innovative air purification devices, suggested for creation of standards and regulations for Air Purifiers with respect to effectiveness and safety of the products in a press conference organised by the company recently. The company further suggested implementation of star based categorization for each Air Purifier model based on their efficiency in removal of various indoor pollutants recommending that will make it easier for consumer to choose the right product and create expectations accordingly.

While an average person spends a majority of its time indoor (approx 20-21 hours a day among air-conditioned homes & offices) they are prone to get in contact with numerous disease causing contaminants. The homes/offices are mostly sealed and allow very little cross-ventilation with less or no sunlight making air conditioners recycle and trap the pollutants in the cool air being circulated within the room. In addition to PM 2.5 (which constitutes only 25% on indoor air pollutants) invading the indoor environment, Paint fumes, perfume, candles, mosquito repellents and cleaning solutions emit harmful VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) thus adding toxic gases which are even more dangerous than polluting factories.

With every breath some pollutant or the other enters the body, bombarding the immune system causing breakdown of health. With no clear demarcations for efficacy of Air Purifiers Consumers buying Air Purifiers with an expectation of improvement in health conditions are left out with just another e-waste. Regulations and standardization which works best for Indian indoor air situations must be incorporated immediately by Government authorized labs/institutions for consumer protection and safety.

Commenting on the need for regulations, Mr. Shuvendu Mazumdar – National Product Manager, Air Purifier at Sharp Business Systems India Private Limited said: “While countries like China, Japan and USA are creating standards for Air Purifiers, India is lagging behind, as a result a herd of products are being dumped into India which does not even conform to basic safety and effectiveness. “Grading & regulations will further help the medical fraternity gain confidence and recommend air purifiers as a prophylactic measure and reduce the overall burden of diseases” he added.

To verify the efficacy of the Sharp Plasmacluster Air Purifiers in actual usage in India, TERI had done a detailed study on the performance efficacy for Sharp at Delhi & Bangalore. The results have shown up to 76% drop of the allergen levels in actual environments. It is also important to verify claims through independent certifications instead of just believing what is written on the catalogue. Sharp Plasmacluster Air Purifiers have been verified by 28 Global labs for its safety and effectiveness.

Sharp has been making efforts to deliver results which can not only prove the efficiency of its Patented Plasmacluster Ion Technology but can deliver results which can further be measured in quantitative terms.
