Hyderabad: The Telangana government is weighing options for linking the MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) with agriculture. According to sources, the state government is likely to come out with a detailed report on the prospects of linking the scheme with the agriculture in a month's time.

However, the scheme would not directly help farmers
The government will make slight changes to the scheme in line with the State's priorities. However, the scheme would not be altered in such a way as to directly help the farmer. But the MGNREGS will be exploited for development of infrastructure, construction of culverts and building bunds on either side of canals.

Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development said the government is considering redesigning the scheme with small changes. Development of infrastructure development related to agriculture, irrigation and allied services will come under this ambit. "This would be purely in synchronization with the Central government’s guidelines. There will be no deviation and the Minister is reviewing this on the same line," said the official. While the farmers on the other hand point out that, if the government's fails to link the agricultural works directly, it would be of no use. Crores of rupees have already been wasted in the scheme in the name of providing employment, which failed to produce the desired results.

T Vishweshwar Rao, State president of Ryotu Sangham recalled that the farmers have been finding it difficult to secure agriculture workers during the season as the government continues the scheme even during the season. "The scheme should have been implemented only during April, May and June when agricultural operations are not taken up. But the scheme has proved to be a hindrance as labourers were not available for farmers," he said. According to him, if the scheme is not directly linked to the agricultural works like tilling, sowing and harvesting, it would be a futile exercise by the government. "Only direct linkage with agriculture will help," he pointed out.
