It is a general practice that most of the open air jails in the country grow big nurseries and sell them to private parties. The prisoners who already spent a reasonably good time in the jail and assessed as good in character get deputed for the nursery related activities. Such prisoners are also paid by the concerned jail authorities for their services. Also, it is obligatory for the corporations to buy their required saplings from these jails, on priority.

As far Cherlapally jail is concerned, it has 130 acres of farms in the jail compound. Over a period of time, many varieties of plants have been grown there and supplied at minimum costs to various agencies. As a mandatory need, the GHMC and HMDA have to purchase saplings from them. Nevertheless, these agencies have recently stopped placing the orders despite several requests. The reasons for stopping the procurement are not known. The GHMC officials say that very soon they will resume the orders. However, the HMDA officials say that they have their own nurseries and would not buy saplings from the jail.
