Hyderabad: Hyderabad has witnessed an increase in the number of deaths due to accidents involving RTC buses. It is said that rash driving coupled with negligence by RTC drivers was the main cause of the increase in number of accidents.

According to figures available with police, 84 people died in accidents involving RTC buses in 2013 but this year already 151 people had lost their lives.

While RTC authorities claim to have taken strict disciplinary action, RTC buses jumping red signals, taking sudden turns at their own will, drivers talking over mobile phones and knocking down pedestrians are regular scenes in the city. Competition among drivers was one of the major causes of accidents, a senior traffic official said.

As per the statistics available, in 2013 a total of 2,741 accidents involving all kinds of vehicles were recorded in the city in which 447 people died and 2,294 people were injured. While in 2014, till August 31, a total of 1,902 accidents took place out of which 234 died and 1,668 were injured. The number of deaths caused by RTC buses alone is 151 taking RTC to fourth place in the cause of accidents in 2014.

Despite various measures like repeated counselling and training, health checkups, psychological tracking of drivers etc., deaths are on the rise. In fact, officials say that in most cases, the fatalities involving RTC buses are due to students and youth trying to get on or off moving buses and two-wheelers suddenly trying to overtake. But one reason they fail to mention is the shortage of staff, tight work schedule and worse health conditions of drivers like poor eye sight and depression.

“An RTC bus (AP11Z 4482) came from behind and stopped inches away from my car at Pillar No. 142 near Attapur crossroads traffic signal around 6 pm a couple of weeks ago. Before the signal turned green, he started moving and almost ‘hit’ my vehicle but I managed to move my car a few inches and could escape with only a minor dent. When I yelled at him, he countered saying “nothing major happened, take it easy.” Do the drivers really want some major accident to happen?” said a disgruntled commuter, Hari Prasanna of Rajendranagar.

When asked, the police said that they had conduced counselling for over 10,000 drivers this year on road safety issues apart from issuing e-challans. They said the public too had a major role to play in avoiding accidents.

In 2013, a total of 6,980 challans were issued to RTC buses while in 2014 so far, 4,700 challans have been issued.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jitendar Kumar said, “There are several penalty cases against RTC buses which are pending. We are nailing down reckless drivers.”

Competition among drivers is one of the major causes.
