Once a beautiful bridge that was the envy of all visitors to the city, Chaderghat bridge today cuts a sorry figure. With the railing broken and cracks appearing in several areas, the bridge is standing precariously. Constructed across the Musi River during the Nizam’s rule, the bridge has served the people of the city for decades, but is now crying for attention.

Chaderghat bridge is devoid of protective railing

It is one of the busiest bridges in the city that connects many suburbs. People travelling from Dilsukhnagar, Malakpet and Secunderabad use the bridge. Anwar, a resident of Rasoolpura, says, “The stones on the footpath too are broken and there is every possibility for people to trip and fall.”

Sarwar, a fruit vendor of Malakpet, says, “The civic officials are not taking any interest. Four years ago two people fell off the bridge and died. Many people including children use the bridge and an accident can happen anytime.”

Children are unmindful of the danger posed

Many sit under the bridge and consume alcohol. A few settlements too have come up under the bridge and many put their lives in danger.

“The volume of traffic on the bridge has increased by leaps and bounds and the bridge needs immediate repair,” says Anwar.
