The Telangana Congress party appears to be in a combative mood as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has been poaching its members’ one after the other.
The Congress alleges that TRS was violating the principles of democracy and the provision under the Anti-defection Law. Some of its members even allege that the TRS was luring its leaders with several promises. On the other hand the TRS says the Congress party has no right to criticise them as none of these leaders, including leader of opposition K Jana Reddy could prevent poaching of TRS members during YSR’s regime.
The frustration among the T Congress legislators was clearly evident when the leader of opposition K Jana Reddy lashed out at the government saying that it had lost the right to continue in the office as it was behaving in a manner that was making a mockery of both the Anti defection Law and the Constitution. Expressing his annoyance over the government’s refusal to take up the issue for discussion of the floor of the House in the ongoing Assembly session, Jana Reddy said that the government was trying to duck under the pretext that the matter was sub-judice as the issue of disqualification of members who crossed over to TRS recently was pending with the Speaker.
But the Congress party was in no mood to relent. The firm stand taken by Jana Reddy party sources say is because he has been clearly told by the AICC to combat the government on all such issues. In fact, the AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh on Tuesday stated in the national capital that those who are leaving Congress in Telangana were driven with selfish intentions. Shifting from one party to another is a common thing in the Telugu speaking states, he added. The Congress members including women legislators like D K Aruna and J Geeta Reddy demanded a discussion on the ‘aya rams and gaya rams’.
Legislative Affairs Minister T Harish Rao took the stand that since the issue of disqualification was pending before the Speaker, the house cannot discuss it. As things appear, the issue will echo inside the House for a white a while now, if not till November 22 when the current sessions ends.
