Hyderabad: The protracted delay in increasing the bed capacity at government hospitals resulted in depriving the poor from availing instant medical treatment facilities in Telangana state. The government released Rs 108 crore for the upgradation of five hospitals and construction of two new hospitals but the Telangana State Medical Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSMIDC) failed to increase the bed capacity in the hospitals identified in the last one year.

According to the GOs, the Telangana government accorded administration sanctions for construction one 50-bedded Community Health Centre and 100-bedded hospital. So far the construction works did not start. From June 2014 to June 2015, government gave permission to upgrade community health centres, primary health centres with 290 beds. Except in Gajwel, works have not started anywhere else.

Speaking to The Hans India, the officials of TSMIDC said that they had to follow the guidelines, designs and other rules while constructing buildings for hospitals. It would take one and half year to complete all the new and upgradation works, the officials added. According to the officials, TMSIDC has no hospital architecture engineers and it has to depend outside engineers for designs. It can only call for tenders and give only line estimations and Proforma estimations.

Peeved at the TSMIDC officials work culture, a health expert and former governing council member of Andhra Pradesh Vaidya Vidhana Parishad Dr Nagabhushanam said that if the government wants it can complete the upgradation works within 6 months. Dr D Ramesh, president, Telangana Government Doctors Association, accused that the delay in construction works was taking place as the TSMIDC officials were demanding more percentage from the contractors.
