Hyderabad: There is an unusual surge of applications seeking admissions into schools of the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions (TSWREI) Society. The society has received whopping 83,000-plus applications this year in contrast to the 54,000 applications received last year. Of the total applications received this year, the society could admit only 19,000 candidates to the schools under its ambit.

According to officials, only about 5 to 10 per cent of students who have completed their class IV in private schools in rural areas took admission into social welfare residential schools. According to RS Praveen Kumar, Secretary, TSWREI Society, the change in the perception of people towards these schools was because of high academic standards’, strong extra-curricular activities and the government’s decision to provide fine rice.

In SSC results announced this year, Social Welfare Residential Schools outperformed private schools by securing 89 pass per cent while pass per cent of private schools was 82. “The last year it was nothing. Parents and students are coming to our schools due to our students’ spectacular achievements not just in academics but other areas too.

We want to prove to the world that government schools are not as bad as you think. We can do better with minimum resources,” said Praveen Kumar. While admissions concluded for this academic year, parents are thronging TSWREI Society for any possibility of getting admission for their wards.

“My daughter had lost seat because of an issue in the admission process. She does not want to study in private school. We are trying our best to send her to the society only,” says Veeranna, a parent, who came all the way from Vikarabad to Hyderabad to sort out issue with the Secretary.

While there is a demand among the parents and the students, the society doesn’t want to increase the number of seats. However, it has sent a proposal for setting up four new schools and is waiting for the government’s approval. “I cannot increase the seats beyond the capacity. If it is done, student, teacher ratio will be affected,” says Praveen.

It is interesting to note that 72 students appeared for IIT-JEE and 40 students cracked it and got admissions into Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). “This year we have sent one child to Nalsar University. For the first time, 10 students will be getting into medical stream this year,” Praveen adds.

Starting from this academic year, the society wants to lay more emphasis on mathematics and physics. And in this regard, it started ‘Operation Einstein’. As part of it, the society has come with mathematics, physical labs in schools and plans to provide as much as digital resources to its students. “We want to change the approach towards learning mathematics. We are asking the students to learn it by do it yourself way,” said Praveen Kumar.

In order to bring holistic development, the Society had already inducted adventure sports- a brain child of Praveen in the extra-curricular activities. “We expose our students to a lot of vagaries. Our students can handle any adversity and still can survive but not students of other schools. We nurture students with survival instinct,” he said.
