Topper Ira Singhal gets just 53% marks

New Delhi: The Civil Services exam topper Ira Singhal got around 53% marks thereby showing the pattern of marking in the exams held by Union Public Service Commission in 2014. The results of the exam were declared by UPSC on July 4. The UPSC has put the mark-sheets of the candidates who qualified the Civil Services (main) examination and those who could not in the public domain.


Around 9.45 lakh candidates had applied, of whom 4.51 lakh appeared for the exam. Of these, 16,933 qualified for the mains and 16,286 candidates took the exam in December. Of 3,308 candidates declared qualified, 3,303 appeared for the personality test or interview. Ira Singhal, a disabled Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise) officer from Delhi, topped the 2014 exam. She got 1,082 marks (53.43%) out of a total of 2,025 comprising 1,750 of main and 275 of interview.

Second ranker Renu Raj, a doctor from Kerala, got 1,056 marks (52.14%) and third-rank holder Nidhi Gupta got 1,025 marks (50.61%), according to their mark-sheet. Around 1,236 candidates, including 590 in general category, 354 belonging to OBCs, 194 from SC and 98 from ST were recommended for appointment to various central government services based on the final results.
