Probable candidates for WARANGAL LS BY-ELECTION

AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi asked TPCC leaders two weeks ago to shortlist names and submit them to high command

Hyderabad: The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) is likely to delay the exercise of presenting a list of names to All India Congress Committee (AICC) to select a candidate to be fielded in Warangal Lok Sabha constituency. The TPCC, in all likelihood, will submit the list of names to the AICC only after the third week of August.

The AICC Vice President, Rahul Gandhi, at a meeting with TPCC and APCC leaders in Delhi on July 15 asked TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy to send the list of candidates within a week for appraisal. The AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh was also present at the meeting.

Rahul Gandhi reportedly asked the TPCC president to ensure that the list contained the names of probable candidates below 50 years. The meeting was held at a time when former APCC president D Srinivas deserted the party and joined the TRS. Rahul Gandhi asked the TPCC and APCC leaders to ensure that there were no more desertions from the party.

Even though two weeks elapsed since the TPCC was asked to send the list of names, the leadership is apprehensive of repercussions of submitting a list of few candidates as it may aggravate dissensions in the party. There are a number of aspirants for the Warangal Lok Sabha seat. The TPCC leaders intend to avoid backlash against them by telling the rank and file that they have no role at all in selection of a candidate.

The Congress leaders denied having any information that the party high command is considering the candidate of former Speaker Meira Kumar. It is, however, speculated that some local leaders sent representations to the party high command in support of the candidature of Meira Kumar.
