Hyderabad: It’s good news for the 1.40 crore population of Hyderabad on the 69th Independence Day as the Telangana government is planning to build two more drinking water reservoirs to meet the ever-growing demand of twin-city dwellers.Addressing the people of the state from the historic Golconda Fort on the occasion of 69th Independence Day celebrations on Saturday, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao promised to bridge the demand & supply gap of drinking water by constructing two more reservoirs as the present Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs have failed to meet the water requirements of the city.

KCR pointed out that two locations have been identified in north and south corners of the state capital for constructing the reservoirs. Each of the proposed reservoirs will have a capacity to store 15 TMC of water. According to officials, each reservoir is likely to be constructed in about 10,000 acres.

Due to land acquisition and other issues, construction of a reservoir will take at least 5 to 6 years. Since availability of large tracts of land in state capital is not possible, one reservoir is likely to come up somewhere near Siddipet (Medak district) and the other in Nalgonda or Mahbubnagar district. The government would lay equal emphasis on ‘water grid’ to supply drinking water to every household and desiltation of irrigation tanks, KCR said.

Osmansagar also known as Gandipet has a capacity of 3.9 TMC of water and another reservoir Himayatsagar has 2.9 TMC capacity. While the drinking water requirement of the twin cities is 612 million gallons per day (MGD), the supply at present is just 385 MGD from these two reservoirs. Part of the gap is being met by bringing water from the Manjira river.
