Lack of teachers in govt schools irks High Court

PIL bench bats for replication of Allahabad court order
Hyderabad: The two-judge PIL bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B Bhosale and Justice SV Bhatt on Thursday voiced displeasure over the government’s (Telangana) inaction in providing sufficient teachers for students in government schools.
The bench was dealing with around 600 letters written to the court by students of Kesavaram, Chintala Kunta, Mittadoddi, Yellamdoddi, Chagadona, Arigadda and Boyalagudem villages of Mahabubnagar district. They complained that they were being deprived of teachers.
When the counsel for the government informed the court that the student to teacher ratio was as per norms, the bench was not satisfied and called for the presence of the Advocate General. Advocate General K Ramakrishna Reddy informed the court of statistics of students and teachers ratio, the bench questioned as to how one teacher could be sufficient for 500 students.
When the Advocate General informed the court that that the Commissioner of School Education was present in the court to assist him in the matter, the bench said “whether the officer is prepared to send his children to government schools? They send their children to the convents leaving the students in rural areas to their plight without providing the teachers”.
Observing that things would be set right only when a senior officer was placed under suspension, the bench directed the authorities to file an affidavit explaining the number of government schools and students and also teachers available for them and number vacancies unfilled by August 30.
