Hyderabad: Minister for Textiles Jupally Krishna Rao has expressed his dissatisfaction over laxity in the functioning of APCO. He has taken the officials to task for failing to take action to collect huge dues piled up for the last 15 years. Chairing a meeting with APCO officials here on Monday, the Minister directed senior officials to focus on collecting dues on priority basis.

He also instructed the officials to maintain a separate account for the Telangana State. The amount owed to the APCO rose to Rs 113 crore and the sum payable to weavers’ societies was Rs 21 crore. The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Tribal Welfare Departments had promised to pay the arrears by September 10.

The Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes Welfare Departments had also agreed to clear the arrears at the earliest, the officials told the Minister. The Minister instructed the APCO management to pay the dues owed to the weaver societies in Telangana State on top priority.

The Minister sternly told the officials that weavers should not be made to suffer because of problems that arose between the various departments in clearing dues to the APCO. He recalled that the weavers, during the National Handloom Day celebrations, narrated their plight to the Minister.

The weavers, he said, were unable to have a square meal a day, Krishna Rao said. Principal Secretary of Tribal Welfare G D Aruna, Commissioner of Tribal Welfare E B D Ekka also took part in the meeting.
