The Kasturba Gurukul Schools, which have been established to provide free and quality education to poor students, have become a curse for them because of the negligent attitude of the officials, corrupt practices of the organisers and lack of nutritious food. As a result more and more students are ending up in hospitals.

Kurnool: The Kasturba Gurukul Schools, which have been established to provide free and quality education to poor students, have become a curse for them because of the negligent attitude of the officials, corrupt practices of the organisers and lack of nutritious food. As a result more and more students are ending up in hospitals.
A case in point is the school at Gonegondla with about 200 students. The scheme of rooting out child labour does not seem to be working in this institution because of the alleged indifference of the organisers. The students suffer untold hardship like taking contaminated water and food. The nutritious food is a scarce commodity.
The organisers fail to provide fresh vegetables including the leaf variety, fruits daily. The contractors, in collusion with the school staff, dump these items for a week, mostly leftovers and decaying. The cooks are forced to prepare food with such items, as their repeated pleas for fresh vegetables on a daily basis are ignored.
Students express anguish that they are unable to get even normal food. Due to lack of safe drinking water they are compelled to take contaminated water. They regularly fall sick with stomach pain, fungus, eczema, malarias and diarrhoea. They are afraid of disclosing their hardship, fearing reprisal from the organisers. Students take bath once or twice a week.
Added to their woes, the bathrooms/toilets are in deplorable condition without doors. They are mostly forced to ease themselves in the open.When the Hans India tried to contact the organiser/staff even their telephone numbers were not available. The organisers are said to be irregular and unavailable.
