KANTHANAPALLY PROJECT
Eturunagaram (Warangal): The police have thwarted Bharatiya Janata Party’s ‘Padayatra’ seeking early completion of Kanthanapally project and arrested the party state president G Kishan Reddy. He was arrested at Etur village as he proceeded towards Devadula project site after visiting Kanthanapally project location in the district on Thursday. He was taken to Eturnagaram police station and was let off later.
Police said the arrest was made as there was no permission to conduct the padayatra, and in view of protests by Adivasis who were opposing execution of Kanthanapally project and planned to obstruct his tour at Buttaigudem en route Devadula.
Situation turned tense for some time following the incident as the workers of the party protested against the arrest of their leader. Mulug DSP Rajamahendra Naik explained the leaders that they could provide no security as the area was naxal affected and located in deep forest.
Kishan Reddy was accompanied by the party MLAs NVSS Prabhakar, Ch Ramchandra Reddy, the party district president E Ashok Reddy, senior leaders T Rajeshwara Rao, M Dharma Rao, G Premender Reddy, V Sriramulu, Y Lakshminarayana, N Venugopal Reddy and others.
Earlier, Kishan Reddy has met the oustees and some tribal leaders opposing the project at Kanthanapally and addressed a public gathering. He accused the Congress of looting public money in the name of Jalayagnam and the TRS of neglecting the projects that were crucial for irrigating lakhs of acres in Telangana.
In order to stabilise SRSP phase I and II, executing Kanthanapally was a must. Measures to complete all pending irrigation projects should be taken immediately, he added. Speaking to press persons, he refuted allegations by the Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao who said the BJP leader was acting at the behest of Andhra TDP leaders and asked him to stage dharna in New Delhi to protest against non-cooperation of the Centre in completing the pending projects in the State.
“We are ready for a debate on the allegations made by the TRS Minister. Even before the TRS was born, BJP fought to protect the interests of Telangana and we don’t need his advice on what to do for the State,” he said.
