Hyderabad: The Telangana State government has given go-ahead for establishing a Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) unit at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore at MNJ Institute of Oncology and Regional Cancer Centre. Dr Jayalatha N, Director of MNJ Institute of Oncology, said survival rate of Leukaemia patients was 40 per cent at present.

Once the Bone Marrow Transplant unit was installed, the survival rate of patients would go up to 80 to 90 per cent, he said. The Institute has been receiving around 1,000 leukaemia patients, 500 children of them were children, a year. Most of the patients, who would visit MNJ for treatment, were poor and they cannot afford to shell out huge money.

The BMT unit would be a boon to cancer patients. Regarding BMT, Dr Sudha Sinha, Medical Oncologist, said most of the people, said the BMT would help the patients from poor families immensely.

“The Autologous Transplantation involves administering a very high-dose chemotherapy for which the corporate hospitals charge around Rs 8 lakh and for Allogeneic Transplantation involves administering the very high doses of chemotherapy to be followed by the infusion of donor's bone marrow will costs Rs 25 lakh in private hospitals,” the doctors said.
