Nalgonda: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday said that the Congress would raise the farmers’ suicide issue in the Legislative Assembly as a top priority one.

He consoled the family members of the farmer, Mekala Karunakar, who committed suicide at Sadupelli village of Yadagirigutta mandal in the district. He interacted with the wife of the deceased farmer, Padma and mother Jayamma and inquired about the reasons led to the suicide.

They told the TPPC president that their family had borrowed about Rs 10 lakh both from banks and private money lenders as they cultivated their one and half acre land and four acres of tenant land. Moved by the family pitiable condition, Uttam Kumar Reddy immediately gave them a cheque for Rs 1 lakh.

Speaking on the occasion, Uttam Kumar Reddy lashed out at the government for not taking up any concrete steps to protect the farmers though the agriculture sector in the State was struck in crisis.
