New Delhi: "Farmers are committing suicides and they are doing so due to various reasons which include indebtedness, domestic problems and alcoholism. The Opposition is making mountain out of molehill. The editors should write responsibly,” claimed TRS MP B Vinod Kumar on Wednesday.

Adopting the usual government line in blaming the previous governments, he listed reasons for suicides. They were bankruptcy or indebtedness, family problems, failure of crops, illness and drug abuse and alcoholic addiction. He found fault with the critics in blaming the government without knowing the facts.

Furthermore, he had given a long sermon for the editors of newspapers and electronic channels on the “dos and don’ts” in their coverage of suicides.

Vinod Kumar said the Telangana State government was doing its best unlike the previous governments in providing seeds and fertilisers in time along with supply quality power for farming as promised during elections.

It was the failure on the part of the Centre in not providing adequate insurance cover and remunerative price to the produce which was driving farmers to desperation. The Centre was ignoring Swaminathan Committee recommendations in extending relief.

He felt that the way the media was covering the farmers’ suicide would further encourage them to commit suicide. The editors, he said, should make constructive criticism.
